ATHENS, Ohio — Carolyn Elizabeth Gilmore, 87, of Athens passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, surrounded by family. Carolyn was born on March 2,1938 in Athens, Ohio. She was the daughter of Sherman and Margaret Biddle Gilmore.
Carolyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Dia Knudson of Athens, granddaughter Kali Knudson of Athens, sister-in-law Jane Williams of Murphysboro, IL, and her friend Scott Keirns of Athens. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother David Gilmore.
Carolyn grew up in Athens, where her father was the principal of Athens Middle School. In 1952, he founded the College Book Store and she started working there soon after. Carolyn graduated from Athens High School in 1956. She attended Ohio University where she was a Pi Phi, then went on to graduate from the Tobé-Coburn School in New York City with a degree in Fashion Marketing. She also worked at Macy’s Herald Square during her time in the Big Apple.
Upon graduation, Carolyn returned to Athens and brought her expertise back to the College Book Store, first as a manager and eventually as an owner. She was a creative force of nature, a workaholic and a perfectionist. She thrived when she was working on all of her projects, including property development and interior design. Carolyn loved her many employees over the years and considered all of them to be family.
Carolyn was well known for her long silver hair, big blue eyes and her chic sense of style. That same style carried over to her love of interior design and all things automotive. She was regularly seen in one of her cool, fun cars with a dog or two. She loved her many dogs and cats over the years and rescued many more as well. Carolyn enjoyed traveling and was always ready for the next big adventure, especially if it involved NYC. She also enjoyed living in the green hills of Athens, bird watching, gardening, football, and so much more. Most importantly, Carolyn’s favorite thing on earth was her granddaughter Kali. She loved being “G” and her greatest joy was being a daily part of Kali’s life.
The family would like to thank everyone at The Laurels of Athens for their loving and exceptional care. Per Carolyn’s request, no funeral service will be observed.
