Gary W. Hines

AMESVILLE, Ohio –– Gary W. Hines, 78, of Amesville, passed away on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, at his residence. He was born on September 13, 1947, in Amesville. He was the son of the late Wayne Woodrow and Doris Marie Wolfe Hines. He was a United States Air Force veteran who served during the Vietnam Era. Following his military service, he retired from the Southern Ohio Coal Company, Meigs Mine #2. He was a member of Bread of Life Church in Jacksonville and also attended Grace Christian Center in The Plains. Gary was an avid outdoorsman who took great interest in hunting, fishing, and working in his garage. He maintained his lawn with notable attention to detail and also provided driving services for members of the Amish community.

He is survived by his wife Cindy L. Duffy Hines of Amesville; two daughters, Tracy Hines and Natalie Hines, both of Athens; three step children, Steven Forgoress of Amesville, Miranda (Chad Preece) Knott of McArthur, and Teri Lynn (Stephen Nichols) Burcher of Amesville; grandchildren Jordyn (Nalend Driggs) Hines, Olivia (Brock) Welker, and Anderson and Avery Shust; great grandchildren, Tucker and Colt Welker; step grandchildren, Gage, Gunner, Gabby, and Hunter Forgoress, Jayden Knott, Teylor and Isabella Nichols, and Madie Preece; three brothers, James (Barbara) Hines of Athens, Michael (Kathleen) Hines of Fairborn, OH, and Demetrios (Holli) Prokos of Athens; several nieces and nephews;  a special friend Mike McGuire; a special cousin Kristin Clark; his church family and the Amesville Community Amish; and his fur babies Angel and Tess.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a great grandson Jace Oliver Welker; a step granddaughter Addie Shay Nichols; and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026, at the Bishopville Church of Christ, 6555 South SR 78 Glouster, OH 45732, with Pastor Ron Fierce officiating. There will be a military service conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit and the United States Air Force.  Visitation will be held on Friday from noon until the time of the service.  Contributions can be made to Ohio Health Hospice, 444 West Union St., Athens, OH 45701.
