Stroh, Joan

Joan Lawson Stroh

ATHENS, Ohio –– Joan Lawson Stroh passed away peacefully at home January 25, 2026. She was the second child of Ruth Goodwin Lawson and Robert F. Lawson.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, David Stroh, her sisters Nancy Harcznak (Steven) and Barbara Cass (Edward).  She was the loving step-mother of Douglas Stroh (Colleen) and Daniel Stroh (Jessica) and dear grandmother of Madison, Benjamin, Molly, Abigail and Noah.  She was predeceased by her brother Robert.

Joan had numerous friends who helped her create a family of choice in Athens with whom she loved nothing more than sitting at the dining room table and sharing a meal.

Joan’s personal and professional life were filled with love and service for her clients, patients, students, and community. She had a private counseling practice in her home for many years in which she provided a safe, loving setting for those seeking help. She worked at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine as a geriatric counselor and social worker and was the local expert for many elderly  and their loved ones dealing with social and emotional issues of aging.  She served on numerous boards in areas dealing with the elderly, recovery, counseling, and other community issues.

Away from the professional world, Joan was an avid gardener and traveler.  Her travels ranged from India and Nepal to Denali and Paris.  Her gardens were renowned for their annual explosion of 27,000 springtime daffodils.  Her excitement at the arrival of her flower bulb order was contagious.

We wish to thank the many who assisted in the loving care Joan received throughout her illness.  Special thanks goes to Margaret Lionberger, DO, a true friend and confidant, and to Ohio Health Hospice who provided loving care during her final days.

A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Feb. 21 at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 64 University Terrace, Athens, with visitation beginning at 10:00. It will be followed by a lunch at The Dairy Barn, 8000 Dairy Lane, Athens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either The John W. Clem Recovery House (8044 Dairy Lane Athens, OH 45701) or the Athens County Senior Center (701 East State Street Athens, OH 45701) in Joan’s name.
