ATHENS, Ohio – Mont Ervin Bennett, age 83, of Athens, died Friday, April 3, 2026 at his home with his family. Born in Athens May 25, 1942, he was the son of the late Floyd Bennett and Margaret Beatrice “Bea” Davis Bennett.
A 1961 graduate of Athens High School, he was active in athletics and was inducted into the Athens High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He retired in 1996 from the Athens Fire Department after 31 years of service. He was involved in farming, cattle, and the rental business.
He was a member of the Athens Church of Christ, VFW, American Legion, Paramuthia Lodge 25 F&AM and Athens Elks Lodge 973 BPOE. He was a Biddy Basketball coach and a “bleacher coach” when his children and grandchildren were young. He always enjoyed watching his family playing sports. He also enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, deer hunting, dancing with his wife, and Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
Mont is survived by his wife, Linda Henthorne Bennett; his two sons, Ben (Karen) Bennett of Dayton and Brian Bennett of Athens; five grandchildren, Jessica Bennett, Colton Bennett, Chase Bennett, Tyler Bennett and Justin Bennett; a great-grandson, Braylon McDonald.
Besides his parent he is preceded in death by his daughter, Stacy Lynn Bennett; three sisters, Donna Wilson, Shirley Bennett and Beverly Hixson, who died Thursday, April 2; and a brother, Sam Bennett.
Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home in Athens with Minister Willard Love officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday at 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Paramuthia Lodge 25 will conduct Masonic Rites at 10:45 a.m. Albany VFW Post 9896 and American Legion K.T. Crossen Post 21 will conduct Funeral Honors at the cemetery.
