ALBANY, Ohio – Peter Burke Abele, 69, of Albany, Ohio, peacefully passed away on September 25, 2026, his wife, Kellie, by his side.
A graduate of the Vinton County High School Class of 1975, Pete went on to earn a B.S. from Bowling Green State University and a J.D. from Capital University Law School. Early in his career, he served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Vinton County, OH, Prosecutor for the City of Athens, OH, and a Referee in the Athens County Common Pleas Court. He was elected to the Ohio Fourth District Court of Appeals and took office in 1991, serving as judge for the past 36 years. During that time, he enjoyed the honor of swearing in many Ohio State Trooper graduating classes and serving, by appointment, on the Ohio Supreme Court.
Pete was a brilliant light, a man with an extraordinary mind, a generous spirit, and a beautiful, radiant smile. His humility and sense of humor endeared him to everyone he met.
Pete lived his life true to his core principles of integrity, honesty, authenticity, curiosity, perspective, and kindness. Having a deep respect for the law, he was devoted to his work and approached it with discernment, balance, and a commitment to the fairness and wisdom of his decisions.
A lifelong baseball fan, after his own playing days, Pete paid forward his love of baseball for well over 30 years by coaching many local teams in levels from Coach Pitch through American Legion. He was constantly studying the game and looking for ways to help young people develop their skills because he wanted to inspire them to achieve their greatest potential.
Pete was loved by everyone who knew him, and his presence here on Earth will be greatly missed, most especially by his family. While it is impossible to describe the depth of their grief, they will keep the spirit of his character and love alive in this world by living in step with his example.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer E. “Pete” Abele and Addie Abele, and his sister, Terry Smith.
Pete is survived by his wife, Kellie; his sons, Alex, Chase, and Ash; and his brother, Andy.
At his request, Pete will be cremated, and no services will be held. The family extends deep gratitude to all who have offered support during this challenging time. Their only request is that anyone who wishes to honor Pete consider making a heartfelt contribution to others, whatever form that may take—even if only the radiance of a smile.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville. A message of comfort may be sent to the family by visiting his tribute wall at www.morrisonfc.com.
