GLOUSTER, Ohio –– Rita M. Downs, 72 of Glouster, passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025, at the Pickering House in Lancaster. 

Born in Nelsonville February 23, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Helen Bendervich Standley.  Rita dedicated her professional life to education, serving as a high school English teacher at Trimble Local Schools. She retired after more than 30 years. Rita cherished spending time with her family. She enjoyed watching crime shows, fishing, taking scenic drives to look for deer, and had a particular fondness for all things licorice.

She is survived by a daughter, Anna (Ben) Lewis of Lancaster; a son, Mike Downs of New Lexington; grandchildren, Madison (Ryan Cain) Lewis, Brittany (Noah Wooten) Lewis, and Abby Smith; two brothers, Donnie Standley and Stephen (Missey) Standley; three sisters, Peggy (Steve) Miller, Mary Ann (Scott Richards) Standley, and Paulette (Randy) Ward; a lifelong friend, Helen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Downs; an infant son, Jeremy Allen Downs; and her beloved fur baby, Miley.

A cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life held at a later date.
