PARIS — The 2024 summer Olympics (July 26-Aug. 11) showcased stellar photography talent produced by OU’s School of Visual Communication.
A worldwide audience has seen Olympic photos taken by OU alumni including Frank Franklin II of The Associated Press, Jack Gruber of USA TODAY, and Maddie Meyer and Sarah Stier of Getty Images.
Stier and Meyer also covered Team USA Olympic swim trials in Indianapolis (June 15-23).
At the Olympics in France, Meyer photographed American multi-medal swimmer Torri Huske. Meyer and Huske went to the same high school in Arlington, Virginia, as reported by The Washington Post.
Ohio University attracts photojournalism students worldwide. Maylasian-born Marcus Yam, who won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography, trained at OU after switching to photojournalism from aerospace engineering.
Forty-six visual journalists from OU have won Pulitzer Prizes, said Tim Goheen, director of the school of visual communication.
In early September, OU plans back-to-school recognition for Charles “Chuck” Scott, co-founder of its school of visual communication. Scott, who died in 2015, would be 100 in August.

“The ability to share knowledge and develop talent is a powerful gift,” said OU Professor Emeritus Terry Eiler, who co-founded the school of visual communication with Chuck Scott, his father in-law.
Graduates of OU’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism also are covering the Olympics in Paris, including Matt Barnes of NBC4 Columbus and Jay Cohen of The Associated Press.
Sportswriter Cohen is based in Chicago. Class of 2011 OU Journalism alum Mathew Wagner, based in Germany, works for Stars and Stripes. His Olympics report published Aug. 3: “Army veteran Hancock successfully defends title, wins fourth Olympic gold in men’s skeet.”
