ATHENS, Ohio — Area residents gathered Saturday afternoon to protest various policy changes made by the Trump administration including healthcare spending cuts, changes to foreign relations, public education cuts and more.
The event was part of a nationwide protest effort organized by the group 50501 (shorthand for 50 states, 50 protests, 1 day), Indivisible, Women’s March and other political advocacy groups. The protest brought out over 1,000 county residents according to protest organizers, many of them carrying signs lambasting the Department of Governmental Efficiency, more commonly known as DOGE, headed by billionaire Elon Musk.
Protestors also carried signs which praised democracy, promoted the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community, accused the Trump administration of fascism and that the administration’s economic policy was ruining the U.S. economy.
The protest comes days after President Trump announced the “liberation day” tariffs which caused the Dow to plummet 2,000 points and wiped out over $6 trillion in value off the stock market. It was reported by NPR that numerous household goods including coffee, meat, seafood, rice, fruit and alcohol are expected to increase in price as a result of the tariffs.
