HAPCAP advances Sunset Shelter Project with contract for renovations

ATHENS, Ohio — Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP) is pleased to announce a major milestone in the development of the Sunset Shelter Project: the project has officially entered into contract for renovations, with work expected to begin this week.

Following multiple rounds of unsuccessful bidding, HAPCAP worked in close coordination with its funding partners to transition to a design-build approach with RVC Architects and 740 Construction, Inc.

“We are excited about moving this project forward, and are eager for construction work to begin,” said Kelly Hatas, Executive Director. “We are reaching this next step through a shared commitment to ensuring our neighbors have access to safe, stable shelter.”

The Sunset Shelter is expected to include 27 units and accommodate up to 48 individuals, offering safe, private spaces that prioritize housing stability as a foundation for long-term well-being.

Community members are encouraged to stay connected for updates, including an upcoming Renovation Celebration, where partners, supporters, and neighbors will be invited to mark this important milestone together.

“This moment would not be possible without the dedication of our partners, volunteers, and donors,” said Valerie Stillson, Chief Development Officer. “We are especially grateful for an anonymous estate gift of $200,000, which will directly support the renovation and help bring the Sunset Shelter Project to life.”

Community members who wish to support the project can make a gift at hapcap.org/giveshelter. Those interested in leaving a legacy through an estate gift can learn more by visiting freewill.com/hapcap or contacting HAPCAP directly.
