ATHENS, Ohio — Southeast Ohio has a number of businesses and programs that help residents with the three ‘R’s of sustainability: reduce, reuse and recycle. And they’re easy to find thanks to the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District’s Recycling Trail.
The district created the program because it received requests from the community to create a visual guide so people can find where they need to recycle almost anything, Director Jane Forrest Redfern told the Independent.
“The point is that we have so many trails around here,” Forrest Redfern said. “People want to jump on this trail or that trail. We decided to make real trails that people can take.”
The program’s website leads those with unwanted or unusable items through short questions to determine if they should reuse, repair or recycle them. Each answer links to a different “trail” showing businesses and organizations that match their needs.
There also are dedicated trails for donations, vintage shopping and automotive waste.
You can even download and print a Recycling Passport to track your progress on the trails.
The solid waste district also holds four to five events annually to promote recycling within the district.
In the spring, the district holds two recycling events: a household waste recycling event in July and in the fall another event for Athens and Hocking counties. For more information about the solid waste district visit its website.
The Southeast Ohio Recycling Terminal also has a recycling guide for everything from appliances (both working and not working) to batteries and used motor oil.
