The council has not received any letters of interest to fill two vacant seats, following the resignations of Tony Dunfee and Justin Booth. Letters must be submitted by March 3.

Council member Nancy Sonick called on residents to step up to fill the vacant seats: “Show us what you can do. Don’t sit there and write about what we do.”

Nelsonville City Council voted to place an issue on the May 6 primary ballot that would retain the city charter, but amend it to allow a mayoral form of government.

The commission will oversee implementation of Issue 23, which abolished the city charter. But the city also is moving to give voters what they want while retaining the charter.

The city is unlikely to resolve key questions before the next, previously scheduled election because Nelsonville City Council has struggled to fill an advisory commission to implement the city’s transition.

Residents and council members alike are uncertain what an appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court would mean for Issue 23 and the city of Nelsonville.

City council may consider that question Dec. 9, as well as whether to create a citizens’ commission to implement Issue 23.
