Starting next year, Athens residents will likely see a more than 40% increase in monthly garbage bills. This is substantially higher than the 10% rate increase residents would have seen, had Athens City Council approved a June contract bid with the same provider, Rumpke Waste and Recycling. The new proposal from Rumpke is 12% more expensive than the company’s previous bid. The city, meanwhile, plans to shift a greater burden of garbage costs to residential customers. (WOUB Public Media)

A federal civil lawsuit accuses the Gallia County Local Schools Board of Education and school district administrators of facilitating sexual misconduct by a high school wrestling coach and his wife. Wildfire management grants: The U.S. Forest Service’s 2024 Cohesive Fire Strategy Grant program is accepting applications through Jan. 16, 2024. Eligible applicants vary by grant but include sovereign Tribal nations, states and local governments, nonprofit organizations, forest fire compacts and academic institutions.

- Christmas food baskets: Residents of Nelsonville or York Township can apply online for Christmas food baskets until Saturday, Dec. 9. Application does not guarantee a basket. Baskets will be delivered starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23.
