Election letter deadline: The last day to submit letters to the editor to the Athens County Independent regarding people or issues on the May 6 ballot is Tuesday, April 15.
Meetings
- Athens tax town hall: The League of Women Voters of Athens County will host a Town Hall Meeting on the City of Athens’ proposed income tax increase at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St. Questions are being taken live at the event, and in advance by email. Please send your email questions to AthensCountyAsks@gmail.com at least 24 hours prior to the event.
- Meeting cancelled: The City of Athens’ Accessibility and Advocacy meeting scheduled for Friday, April 11, has been cancelled. The next meeting is set for May 9.
- Meeting rescheduled: The Trimble Local School District’s April 10 meeting has been rescheduled for April 17.
Government
- Audits: Athens City School District, Financial Audit: July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024; Trimble Local School District, fiscal emergency analysis declaration, July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.
- Ad Hoc Committee clerk wanted: The Ad Hoc Committee to the Nelsonville City Council is accepting letters of interest for the paid position of clerk. Apply by noon Thursday, April 10.
- Code Enforcement officer wanted: The City of Nelsonville seeks to hire a code enforcement officer. Apply by 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 16.
Traffic advisories
- City of Athens
- Joneswood Drive: Closed between Columbia Avenue and Terrace Drive due to a road slip. No through or emergency traffic. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
- Ohio Department of Transportation:
- U.S. 33 and SR 682 Roundabout: Traffic maintained by flaggers on SR 682. Right shoulder closed on U.S. 33 westbound. SR 682 ramp to U.S. 33 westbound closed April 1 through Aug. 1. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
- SR 7 resurfacing: Begins April 28 from the Meigs County line to Church Road. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Estimated completion: July 15.
Community
Volunteer opportunity: Good Works has opportunities for groups of 15–20 to join a week-long work retreat, June 15 through August 2, to care for widows, widowers and adults with disabilities at their homes in Athens County.
