Traffic
- City of Athens
- Paving schedule: Paving of city streets began July 28; view the list on the city’s website. No on-street parking will be allowed during the work; closed areas will be posted 24 hours in advance. The schedule is subject to change for inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
- Ohio Department of Transportation:
- SR 144 culvert replacement: Between Main Street and Four Mile Creek Road. The road is closed; detour U.S. 50 to SR 124 to SR 144. Estimated completion: Aug. 29.
- U.S. 33 and SR 682 roundabout: SR 682 at U.S. 33. Open with flaggers. Right shoulder is closed on U.S. 33 westbound. Beginning August 13, the off ramp from U.S. 33 west to SR 682 will be closed. Use the non-interchange exit for Chauncey then turn right onto North Plains Road. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
- U.S. 50 RCUT: Reduced collision U-turn construction is taking place on U.S. 50 at Coolville. Lane closures are in place in both directions. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
- U.S. 33 Athens-Meigs expansion: Motorists may encounter flaggers at the highway’s intersections with Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton and Rainbow Lake roads, as well as SR 681. Estimated completion: 2028.
- Nelsonville:
- Festival street closures: No parking, with street closures ongoing through Aug. 17. Use an alternate route. Full list of street closures available through link.
- The ongoing Canal Street project is on hold during the festival.
- Canal Street project: Project taking place at Old U.S. Highway 33, East Canal Street, West Canal Street, West Washington Street, Burr Oak Blvd., and Happy Hollow Road. Lane closures in place; traffic could be detoured onto side streets. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.

- Athens and OU luncheon: Athens City Council is hosting a luncheon meeting with Ohio University officials 12:30–1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. Ohio University Inn & Conference Center, 331 Richland Ave., Wilson room, Athens.
- Water pressure fluctuation: Sunday Creek Valley Water District will perform maintenance on Peach Ridge Water Tank for the next three weeks. Customers may experience low pressure at different times. Please conserve and report outages.
- Additional Bailey’s trails open: Nine miles of new trail are open to ride as of Sat., Aug 9.
- Classical music food bank fundraiser: 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18. Works by Brahms will be performed on viola, violin and piano. Donation-based; all proceeds benefit The Southeast Ohio Food Bank.
- Nelsonville Trick-or-Treat survey: The City of Nelsonville is looking for community input on its 2025 Trick-or-Treat. Submissions are anonymous; form available until noon Sept. 1.

- Funding for Nelsonville area projects: The Nelsonville Community Foundation and its partners are accepting grant proposals for projects beneficial to Nelsonville, Buchtel, Carbon Hill, and Murray City. Application period closes Tuesday, Sept. 9.
- Driver training program grants: The Ohio Department of Public Safety has funding for grants to expand access to teen driver training for low-income families. Interested agencies must submit proposals by noon Friday, Sept. 12.
