General announcements

  • Buchtel boil order: The Nelsonville Water Department has issued a boil alert for residents on Carbon Hill Buchtel Road from Bessemer Road to the Hocking County line, Dew Lane, Sandy Lane, Bessemer Road, and Conner Road until noon tomorrow, July 31. Residents should boil cooking and drinking water for at least three minutes before consuming it.
  • ODOT virtual hearing today: The Ohio Department of Transportation will host a virtual public meeting at 1 p.m. today, July 30, on proposed changes to the U.S. 50/Brimstone Road intersection in Coolville. Join the meeting online or join by phone by calling 855-925-2801 and entering meeting code 7133. The presentation will be the same as the July 16 public meeting.  
  • Library board meeting: The Athens County Public Libraries board will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. this Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Nelsonville Public Library, 95 W. Washington St., Nelsonville. The meeting’s purpose is to respond to a request to recognize a proposed employee union. 

Traffic advisories

Athens

  • West Union Street: As of today, July 30, West Union Street is open to two-way traffic from the bridge at SR 682 to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. Herrold Avenue also is now open to two-way traffic. Direct questions or concerns to the Engineering and Public Works Department at 740-593-7636. 
  • West State Street: West State Street will close at 7 a.m. tomorrow, July 31, from the eastern edge of the West State Street Cemetery to ArtsWEST for a sewer manhole repair.  The road will remain closed until the repair has been completed. No through or emergency traffic will be allowed; motorists should avoid the area. 

Nelsonville

  • Fort Street: Closed between Washington and Franklin streets until further notice due to a sinkhole. Crews are working on the problem but do not have an estimate for completion of repairs. 
  • Madison Street: Closed from city limits to West Washington Street so AEP can replace electrical poles. Work will take place daily from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., beginning at the northern end and working south. Flaggers will be in place at both ends to assist with traffic. Motorists should avoid the area. 

Athens County Engineer

  • South Rodehaver Road: South Rodehaver Road (CR 57) will be closed today until 4:30 p.m. between Dog Hollow Rd (Twp. 685) and North Young Road (Twp. 107) for a culvert replacement.

Ohio Department of Transportation:

  • SR 690 resurfacing: Between U.S. 50 and SR 550. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: July 31.
  • South Green Drive: Pedestrian safety improvements; 10-foot lane restriction. Expected completion: Aug. 5.
  • U.S. 50 resurfacing: Lane closures from Della Drive to River Road; periodic ramp closures. Expected completion: Aug. 15.
  • Trimble Twp. 313: Road closures will be in place for the resurfacing and culvert maintenance project through the Wallace O’Dowd Wildlife Area. Expected completion: Sept. 1.
  • Albany traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
  • SR 144 slope stabilization: One lane closed between Mountain Bell Road and SR 7; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
