Cooling stations available: Those needing to escape this week’s heat can go to the lobby of the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens, during regular business hours: 6 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday and 1–5 p.m. Sunday. HAPCAP’s office at 3 Cardaras Drive, Glouster, also is available 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; the office is closed Wednesday for Juneteenth.

Pride Month Guide: The Buckeye Flame’s 2024 LGBTQ+ Pride Guide compiles over 100 Pride events throughout Ohio, including several events in Athens County. Pride Month is celebrated in June.

Free sports physical clinics: Middle and high school athletes can receive free physicals by appointment between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital Family Medicine, 26 Hospital Drive, Athens. To schedule, call 740-249-4122.

ACLU of Ohio events: The ACLU of Ohio will hold two in-person events in Athens County this week. Learn about efforts to create a bipartisan redistricting commission by constitutional amendment at the Nelsonville Action Team Meeting, 4 p.m. Thursday, June 20, Nelsonville Public Library, 95 W. Washington St., Nelsonville (register). Share your thoughts, concerns and priorities with the organization at a Community Conversation at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Athens Public Library, 30 Home St., Athens (register).


Public meetings

  • Athens County Board of Revision: 10 a.m. Thursday, June 20, county auditor’s conference room on the first floor of the courthouse annex, 15 S. Court Street, Athens.
  • City of Athens Pedestrian Accessibility and Bicycle Task Force: 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 21, Berry Conference Room, Athens City Building, 8 E. Washington St., Athens.

Traffic advisories

Athens

  • East Union Street between South College Street and University Terrace will close between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 20, for brick roadway repairs. No through traffic will be allowed and parking will be unavailable. 
  • West Union Street project: West Union Street remains one-way eastbound. Shelly & Sands crews continue to install curbs, sidewalks and drives on the northern end. Paving of closed portions of the street began June 14, starting at the SR 682 bridge and continuing east to the O’Bleness entrance. Stone will be removed from driveways for paving. Businesses with multiple entrances will retain one access point except for a short time. 

County Engineer

  • Culvert replacement: Vanderhoof Road (CR 65) between Carthage Twp Road 119 and Moyis Road (Carthage Twp 125) is closed 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18.
  • Leveling: King Road (CR 45)
  • Mowing: Harmony Road (CR 24), North Coolville Ridge Road/Mansfield Road (CR 90) and Della Drive (CR 52)

Ohio Department of Transportation:

  • Chauncey sanitary sewer project: SR 13 closed from SR 682 to West Bailey Road. Detour is SR 682 to U.S. 33 west to SR 78 to SR 685 to SR 13. Estimated completion: July 11.
  • U.S. 50 traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Underway. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
  • U.S. 50 resurfacing
    • Della Drive to River Road. Lane closures in both directions; periodic ramp closures. Expected completion: Aug. 15.
    • East State Street: Periodic closures of the ramps from East State Street to U.S. 50, and from U.S. 50 to East State Street from June 10-11. Traffic maintained by flaggers.
  • SR 690 resurfacing: Between U.S. 50 and SR 550. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: July 31.
  • South Green Drive pedestrian safety improvements; 10-foot lane restriction. Expected completion: Aug. 5.
