Traffic

- U.S. 33 Athens-Meigs expansion: A two-lane to four-lane expansion project is taking place on U.S. 33 from Athens to Darwin and Five Points to Ravenswood. Lane closures will be in place in both directions on U.S. 33 between Pleasant Hill Road and Oxley Road. Rolling roadblocks will be in place during rock blasts. Flaggers will maintain traffic at side roads intermittently. Estimated completion: 2028.
Athens
- SR 682/56 roundabout: Construction of a roundabout and sidewalks at the intersection continues. The city’s website on the project is out of date and the Independent has been unable to get a completion date.
- East State Street: Road will be closed at 74 E. State St. through Wednesday, March 11 for storm sewer investigation and repair. Traffic detoured to Carpenter and Stimson; no emergency or thru-traffic; motorists are asked to avoid the area.
Nelsonville
- Nelsonville Public Square partially closed: The east side of the Public Square is closed and barricaded to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic from the Dew House to the end of Rhapsody restaurant until further notice.
- Fredrick Street: Closed at 532 Fredrick St. 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 13. Avoid area, use an alternative route.
General
- Election town hall: 6–8 p.m. Wednesday, March 11. Athens Public Library, 30 Home St., Athens. Public forum for candidates from all parties to meet up with constituents.
- Athens cemetery clean-up: Any grave decorations not removed before March 15 will be thrown away. Contact the city service-safety director’s office at 740-592-3340 with any questions.
- Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council: Seeking proposals for rooftop repair and replacement services. Sealed proposals are due no later than 4 p.m. Monday, March 16. Contact support@sopec-oh.gov with any questions.
- Winter Crisis Program: Hocking Athens Perry Community Action’s Winter Crisis Program will end March 31. Residents of Athens, Hocking and Perry counties may schedule appointments at 740-868-1908 or online.
- Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia: Pending weather conditions and any unforeseen events, the Baileys Trail System will reopen to mountain bikes for the season April 3.
- AIFVF: The 53rd Athens International Film + Video Festival returns April 13–19 at the Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., Athens. . Lineup includes Boots Riley, Amy Jenkins, Angelo Madsen, and duo Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle.
- Athens Public Library: The Athens Public Library at 30 Home St. will be undergoing renovations. Athens library meeting rooms will not be available to the public during construction; free spaces can be reserved for other locations.
- Youth recreation: Registration open now for a five-week inclusive sports development program for Athens County youths ages 8 and older.
