The Athens County Board of Elections will hold a regular and disputed board meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the board office, 15 S. Court St. room 130, Athens. If you have questions, please contact the board office at 740-592-3201.
The Ohio Auditor’s Office has released audits for the following entities:
- Tri-County Career Center, 2022–’23 fiscal year
- Athens Metropolitan Housing Authority Real Estate Assessment Center Financial Assessment, 2021 calendar year
All trails and recreation sites in the Athens Ranger District of the Wayne National Forest will reopen Friday, April 5.
The Bureau of Land Management is seeking input on its supplemental environmental assessment evaluating possible impacts from potential oil and gas leasing within the Wayne National Forest until May 6.
The Ohio Division of Liquor Control reminds organizations that it is transitioning to a fully online application process for temporary liquor permits. The transition could take effect in April; specific dates will be announced in coming weeks.
Road Work
- Hebbardsville Road (CR 19) will close Wednesday, March 27, through Friday, March 29, for a culvert replacement. The closure is between 2847 and 2732 Hebbardsville Road, between its intersections with Enlow and Meadowbrook roads.
- Bessemer Road (York Twp. 22) is restricted to one lane from Woodlane Drive to Elm Street in Buchtel until 5 p.m. Friday, March 29, for road repairs following water line replacement. Temporary traffic lights are located at either end of the area; if possible, use an alternate route.
- Work has begun on a signal replacement and turn lane installation at the intersection of U.S. 50 and Washington Road in Albany. Estimated completion: May 1.
- Traffic on Herrold Avenue in Athens is now one way from Davison Court to West Union Street. Two-way traffic is open from Davison Court to West State Street. Expected completion for this phase of the West Union Street project is July 2024, depending on weather and work conditions.
Utilities
- AEP tree marking: On Monday, April 1, Asplundh Tree Expert will begin marking trees to be trimmed or cut to avoid contact with overhead power lines on the streets and roads on Athens’ south side. If they cannot make personal contact with property owners, Asplundh will leave a door hanger with contact information; owners also will receive a telephone message. Trimming will begin June 5.
- Nelsonville water line survey: Staff from the Rural Community Assistance Partnership are visiting homes in Nelsonville this week to conduct a water service line survey to help the city meet an EPA mapping mandate. In addition to home visits, RCAP staff will dig to visually inspect a portion of the service line near the curb to check for lead pipes. Surveyors will wear high-visibility apparel with the RCAP logo and carry identification. If you have questions, call the city Utilities office at 740-753-2151.
City of Athens recently enacted ordinances:
- 0-10-24: Authorizes the city service-safety director to enter contracts for construction and construction engineering of improvements to the city sewer system, up to $2.11 million
- 0-12-24: Conveys city-owned property at 83 Columbus Road to the Athens Community Improvement Corporation
- 0-24-24: Designates an unnamed right-of-way on Herrold Avenue as Davison Court
- 0-29-24: Approves a then-and-now certificate in the amount of $3,358 for payment to BIS Digital for a digital recording system maintenance contract
