Volunteers wanted: The Southeastern Ohio Veterans Memorial Support Group needs volunteers to help locate, clean, flag and mark veterans’ graves in the New Marshfield Cemetery starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Please come to the red brick building in the cemetery located on Old State Route 56 (CR 6) for a short lecture and demonstration. 

City of Athens

  • Hydrant flushing: The fire department will flush and test hydrants on Richland Avenue this week. Tap water may be discolored, but is safe to drink. However, residents should avoid washing laundry until the water clears.  
  • Summer program guide: The Athens Arts, Parks and Recreation Summer Program Guide is now available online or at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St.
  • Recently adopted ordinances
    • 0-31-24: Grants special right-of-way for seven years to Uptown Realty Group for balcony replacement at 74 and 74 ½ N. Court St.
    • 0-32-24: Grants special right-of-way for seven years to Mount Zion Black Cultural Center to create a patron drop-off at 32 W. Carpenter St.  
    • 0-33-24: Amends Ordinance 02-24 to appropriate the entire $610,000 cost of the city fiber network project from the ARPA Fund. The original ordinance used $500,000 in ARPA funds and $110,000 from the unappropriated balance of the general fund.
    • 0-34-24: Authorizes the Service-Safety Director to renew the city’s five-year contract with Axon Enterprise for body cameras and Tasers at a cost of $376,000 from the police fund, plus up to $6,500 from the unappropriated balance of the general fund for additional costs associated with the second half-year payment.
    • 0-35-24: Authorizes the mayor to sign the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council Grant Agreement.
    • 0-36-24: Extends the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) by 4.28 acres and extending hours to begin at noon Monday–Thursday and end at 11 p.m. Monday–Saturday.  
    • 0-43-24: Authorizes the Service-Safety Director to purchase without bids a used bucket truck at a cost of $125,000 from the Street Fund.
    • 0-50-24:  Authorizes the Service-Safety Director to enter a one-year contract with the Washington County Commissioners to house prisoners in the Washington County Jail.  

Traffic advisories

Burr Oak Boulevard between East Canal Street and Hillside Drive is closed until 5 p.m. Friday, May 24, for a water line replacement project. 

Ohio Department of Transportation projects:

  • U.S. 33 bridge deck repair: From the U.S. 33 North/U.S. 50 East split near Stimson Avenue to the U.S. 50 West ramp to U.S. 33 North. Begins May 20. Expected completion: May 29.
  • U.S. 50 traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Under way. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
  • U.S. 50 resurfacing
    • Della Drive to River Road. Lane closures in both directions; periodic ramp closures. Expected completion: Aug. 15.
    • East State Street: Begins in June; traffic maintained by flaggers. Expected completion: Aug. 15.
  • SR 690 resurfacing: Between U.S. 50 and SR 550. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: July 31.
  • Hockhocking Adena Bikeway resurfacing: Closed from the Currier Street lot (Athens) to Loop Road (Nelsonville). Expected completion: June 14.
  • South Green Drive pedestrian safety improvements: Begins May 13. 10-foot lane restriction. Expected completion: Aug. 5.
