Meeting cancellation: The Athens Mayor’s Weekly Update scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled.
Boil order: The Nelsonville Water Department has issued a boil order for all customers on Hillside Drive, Crihfield Drive, Starr Drive and Burr Oak Boulevard from High Street to the U.S. 33 overpass until noon on Wednesday, May 22. This boil order is necessary due to a tie-in for a new water line.
Nelsonville 911 service changes: Effective June 1, the nonemergency number for the Nelsonville Police Department (740-753-1736) will ring into a phone tree with options for callers. Call 911 for emergencies.

- Press 2 to ask questions about city operations or events or to make a code complaint.
- Press 3 to ask questions about the Mayor’s Court or to pay fines.
- Press 4 to request a copy of a police report, ask questions about police records or to leave a message for an individual officer.

Tire recycling days: The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District has two tire drop-off events scheduled in June in Athens County. Cost is $0.50 per tire, $4 with rim. Limit 10 tires per vehicle. Cash or check only. Tires must be free of fluids. First come, first served; when the trailer is full, the event is over.

- Athens-Hocking Recycling Center needs volunteers to help with a state-funded beautification project on three dates in June.
- 1:30–6 p.m. Saturday, June 1: Litter pickup at the AHRC facility at 5991 Industrial Drive near The Plains.
- 1:30–6 p.m. Saturday, June 8: Upcycled art creation at the Community Makerspace, 751 W. Union St., Athens.
- 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday, June 15: Installation of art and creation and planting of raised flower beds.
- SE Ohio Foodbank invites volunteers to help pack boxes for children facing hunger this summer. 10 a.m.–noon Wednesday, May 29, SE Ohio Foodbank Annex, 35222 Hocking Drive, Logan.
City of Athens
- Hydrant flushing: East and West State streets.
- West Union Street, May 20–31: Subbase stone placement on the north side of W. Union to Herrold Avenue; curb placement on the east side of Herrold Avenue; storm systems and structures installation on the north side of W. Union from Herrold Avenue to the OhioHealth O’Bleness Memorial Hospital entrance.
- Dairy Lane: Road closed, local traffic maintained May 20–23 and May 28–30.
Traffic advisories
The Featherstone Road bridge (Rome Twp. 192) will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 22. The bridge is located near the intersection with Big Run Road (CR 85). The closure may extend into Thursday.
Burr Oak Boulevard between East Canal Street and Hillside Drive is closed until 5 p.m. Friday, May 24, for a water line replacement project.
Ohio Department of Transportation projects:
- U.S. 33 bridge deck repair: From the U.S. 33 North/U.S. 50 East split near Stimson Avenue to the U.S. 50 West ramp to U.S. 33 North. Expected completion: May 29.
- U.S. 50 traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Under way. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
- U.S. 50 resurfacing
- Della Drive to River Road. Lane closures in both directions; periodic ramp closures. Expected completion: Aug. 15.
- East State Street: Begins in June; traffic maintained by flaggers. Expected completion: Aug. 15.
- SR 690 resurfacing: Between U.S. 50 and SR 550. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: July 31.
- Hockhocking Adena Bikeway resurfacing: Closed from the Currier Street lot (Athens) to Loop Road (Nelsonville). Expected completion: June 14.
- South Green Drive pedestrian safety improvements: Begins May 13. 10-foot lane restriction. Expected completion: Aug. 5.
