Holiday announcements
- 2024 Nelsonville/York Township Christmas baskets: Applications for Christmas baskets will be available starting Friday, Nov. 29. Applicants must live in the city of Nelsonville or York Township; application does not guarantee receiving a basket. Forms will be available at Nelsonville Fire Department and Nelsonville Water Department, both at 211 Lake Hope Drive or apply online. Applications close Dec. 7.
- Gifts for seniors: Participate in HAPCAP’s 2024 Super Senior Donation Drive by dropping off a present that will go to a Meals on Wheels client. Accepting new items including socks, slippers, gloves, hats, cough drops, lip balm, tea, crackers, puzzles, books, or other comfort treats. Dropoff locations in Athens, Nelsonville and Logan. Donations due by Friday, Dec. 6.
- Free designated drivers: The Ohio Traffic Safety Office has partnered with Lyft to offer $20 rideshare credits during Thanksgiving week to keep impaired drivers off the road. To claim the $20 credit, open the Lyft app, choose “Payment” from the menu on the top left corner, and scroll to the “Add Lyft Pass” section. Enter the code 2024PLANARIDEOH. The $20 credit will be applied to the user’s account and must be used within 24 hours.
General announcements
- Athens leaf pickup: City of Athens loose-leaf pickup is in Area #1 this week through Wednesday, Nov. 27, including the Northside, Near Eastside, and Far Eastside Neighborhoods. Final city sweep will take place Dec. 16–20.
- Nelsonville leaf pickup: City of Nelsonville loose leaf pickup will occur this week on Tuesday, Nov. 26, between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (continued on even-numbered weekday dates through Dec. 6, except for Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day). Rake leaves to curbside; do not include branches, sticks, grass clippings or tall grass, which can clog and damage equipment. City crews will not rake leaves.
Traffic advisories
Athens
- Sells Park Dam: Weather delays prolong construction to the Sells Park Parking Area, with access at the end of Avon Place closed for maintenance. Expected completion: Nov 27.
- West Union Street: Traffic is now two-way from SR 682 to Shafer Street. While preparing for paving, crews will work on sidewalks on the north side of the street, as well as install water service lines, drains, curbs, and gutters from Herrold Avenue to Shafer Street. Flaggers may be present in the work area. Expected completion: November.
- Mendon Pipeline will not work until the week of Dec. 2, when paving crews will also work on Converse Street from Elm Street, to past Lexington Avenue. They will also be finishing up on Birge Street.
