General

  • US 33 blasting meeting: The Ohio Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on planned blasting operations for the expansion of US 33 between Athens and Darwin, which is expected to begin this month. The meeting will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Athens ODOT Garage, 700 W. Union St., Athens.
  • Athens County fall recycling day: See link for list of accepted items and fees. 9 a.m–1 p.m. Oct. 18. Athens County Fairgrounds, 286 W. Union St., Athens
  • Public celebration of the “Piano Man”: Friends and family of Rick O’Keefe invite the public to a potluck celebration of his life at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, West State Street Park Pavilion #2, Athens. (In case of rain or cold weather, meet at United Campus Ministry Center at 18 N. College St., Athens.)
  • Community Food Initiatives fundraiser: Join CFI for a family-friendly fundraiser with local food trucks and silent auction. 4–8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. Jackie O’s Taproom, 25 Campbell St., Athens.  
  • Gambling study volunteers: The Thoughts and Experiences of Addictions Lab at Ohio University invites rural Appalachian Ohioans age 18 and up who have gambled in the past 12 months (e.g., lottery, sports, casino, etc.) to complete a survey for a study on ways to eliminate barriers to support for gambling problems in rural areas. Individuals interested in sharing their gambling experiences and completing this 45-60 minute survey can complete the following eligibility survey to see if they are eligible: tinyurl.com/screenrg.

  • Ridges New Community Authority, basic audit, June 15, 2023–Dec. 31, 2024. 
  • Athens County Family and Children First Council, financial audit, Jan. 1, 2023–Dec. 31, 2024

Traffic

  • Ohio Department of Transportation
    • U.S. 50 RCUT: Reduced collision U-turn construction is taking place on U.S. 50 at Coolville. Lane closures are in place in both directions. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • SR 682 sewer line project: Project ongoing between 3rd Street and 4th Street; temporary signals in use. Estimated completion: Nov. 10. 
    • U.S. 33 and SR 682 roundabout: Flaggers present at SR 682 at U.S. 33. The right shoulder is closed on U.S. 33 westbound; right land is closed on U.S. 33 eastbound. The off-ramp from U.S. 33 west to SR 682 is closed. Estimated completion: Nov. 28.
    • U.S. 33 Athens-Meigs expansion: Lane closures in place in both directions on U.S. 33 between Pleasant Hill Road and Oxley Road through Oct. 24. Rolling road blocks will be in place when rock blasting is occurring. Estimated completion: 2028. 
  • City of Athens
    • OU Homecoming parking: Parking for OU’s football game will be available at Richland Avenue Park from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. $15/vehicle; advance registration required. Parking attendant on-site until 3:30 p.m.; tailgating permitted, restrooms available.
    • Madison Avenue: Closed from the intersection of E. State Street to approximately 50 feet north of the intersection. Estimated completion: Oct. 24.
  • Nelsonville
    • Resurfacing/concrete repair: Underway at Old U.S Highway 33, Canal Street, West Washington Street, Burr Oak Boulevard, and Happy Hollow Road. Lane closures in place where work is occurring; traffic detours on side-streets likely. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • Canal Street project:
      • West Canal Street from Madison Street to September Street is underway. Detour using Madison Street, West Columbus Street and September Street. 
      • Concrete and paving underway on East Canal Street from 2nd Street to Burr Oak Boulevard; roadway closed. Detour using Chestnut Street and Burr Oak Boulevard. Estimated completion: Oct. 31. 
    • Hocking Parkway on game days: Parkway closed to traffic from both ends of Loop Road 11 a.m.–6 p.m. during 2025 Hocking College home football games. Please avoid this area and use an alternative route on these dates.
      • Game day schedule, all Saturdays: Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 8.
