Event announcements

  • Issue 1 event: Former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor will speak about her involvement with Citizens Not Politicians, the group backing state Issue 1, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Baker Theatre in Baker University Center on the Ohio University campus in Athens.
  • Foodbank distribution: The SE Ohio Foodbank will distribute food to qualifying Athens County residents from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Kilvert Community Center, 21120 McGraw Road, Stewart.
  • Athens County Recycling Day: The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District will hold its Fall Recycling Day for Athens County from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Fees will be charged for TVs, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs; cash or check only. No tires, shredded paper or hazardous waste.

General announcements

  • Athens water line notices: City of Athens water customers will receive notices by Nov. 15 about the materials used in the city’s water-service lines to their location. The city has confirmed that its water mains do not contain lead.
  • Athens leaf pickup: City of Athens loose-leaf pickup this week is in Area #1: north of Stimson Avenue, east of Grosvenor Street and east of the Hocking River, including Columbia Avenue above Roosevelt Drive and Columbus Road past North Lancaster Street. Oct. 21–25 pickup is in Area #2: south of Stimson Avenue, west of Grosvenor Street and mostly north of the Hocking River, including University Estates, Armitage Road, Union Street to Jefferson Avenue, and the north side of West State Street. 
  • Volunteer honors: Athens Food Rescue named Janalee Stock its Volunteer of the Month.
  • Foot and Mouth Disease Survey: In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and The Ohio State University, the Ohio Department of Agriculture is conducting a Foot and Mouth Disease Landscape Analysis Survey to assess producers’ awareness and knowledge of FMD preparedness and response. Complete the survey by Oct. 27.
  • Audit released: The Auditor of State’s office has released Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) Financial Assessment Submission Agreed-Upon Procedures for the Athens Metropolitan Housing Authority for the 2022 calendar year.

Traffic advisories

Athens

  • West Union Street: Two-way traffic is open from the bridge at SR 682 to Jefferson Street and from Shafer Street to Hospital Drive. Herrold Avenue also is two-way. Jefferson Street to Hospital Drive is one way eastbound (towards Uptown), with work extending past the gas station to Seaman’s. Business entrances will experience temporary closures. Ohio Department of Transportation

  • Albany traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
  • SR 144 slope stabilization (2): One lane closed between Mountain Bell Road and SR 7; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 1. One lane closed between Jewell Hollow Road and Bethany Ridge Road; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 15.
