General announcements

  • Athens leaf pickup: City of Athens loose-leaf pickup this week is in Area #3, including The Ridges, Wonder Hills and Richland Avenue.
  • Tax levy tool: Athens County property owners can use a new online tool from the county auditor’s office to evaluate the impact of local levies on the Nov. 5 general election ballot. 
  • Food distribution: The SE Ohio Foodbank will distribute fresh produce and other food items to eligible Athens County residents at the Coolville Public Library, 26401 Main St., from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. To access food assistance, you must qualify for state benefits or have an income under 200% of federal poverty levels, and show a photo ID and proof of residency that is no more than 60 days old.
  • Bird Arena closed: Bird Arena will be closed for the rest of 2024 for an unexpected equipment issue related to maintaining the arena’s ice. 
  • Disabilities Commission celebration: The Athens City Commission on Disabilities will commemorate its 20th anniversary and present the 2024 Athena Award at its annual dinner at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St. The public is invited to attend; RSVP to disabilitiescommission@ci.athens.oh.us

Traffic advisories

Athens

  • West Union Street: Traffic is now two-way from SR 682 to Shafer Street. Crews will be working on sidewalks on the north side of the street, as well as installing water service lines, drains, curbs and gutters from Herrold Avenue to Shafer Street; and preparing for paving. Flaggers may be present in the work area. Completion date: November 2024.

Nelsonville

  • Hocking Parkway: Hocking Parkway will be closed between both ends of Loop road on from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 9, for Hocking College home football games. Use Loop Road as a detour.

Ohio Department of Transportation

  • Albany traffic signal replacement: U.S. 50 at Washington Road/Meadowbrook Road in Albany. Short-term lane closures with flaggers. Expected completion: Nov. 1.
  • SR 144 slope stabilization (2): One lane closed between Mountain Bell Road and SR 7; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 1. One lane closed between Jewell Hollow Road and Bethany Ridge Road; traffic maintained with temporary signals. Expected completion: Nov. 15.
