Traffic

  • Ohio Department of Transportation
    • U.S. 50 RCUT: Reduced collision U-turn construction is taking place on U.S. 50 at Coolville. Lane closures are in place in both directions. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • SR 682 sewer line project: Project ongoing between 3rd Street and 4th Street; temporary signals in use. Estimated completion: Nov. 10. 
    • U.S. 33 and SR 682 roundabout: Flaggers present at SR 682 at U.S. 33. The right shoulder is closed on U.S. 33 westbound; right land is closed on U.S. 33 eastbound. The off-ramp from U.S. 33 west to SR 682 is closed. Estimated completion: Nov. 28.
    • U.S. 33 Athens-Meigs expansion: Lane closures in place in both directions on U.S. 33 between Pleasant Hill Road and Oxley Road through Oct. 24. Rolling road blocks will be in place when rock blasting is occurring. Estimated completion: 2028. 
  • City of Athens
    • OU Homecoming parking: Richland Avenue Park will be available for football game attendees to park 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. $15/vehicle; advance registration required. Parking attendant on-site until 3:30 p.m.; tailgating permitted, restrooms available.
  • Nelsonville
    • Resurfacing/concrete repair: Underway at Old U.S Highway 33, Canal Street, West Washington Street, Burr Oak Boulevard, and Happy Hollow Road. Lane closures in place where work is occurring; traffic detours on side-streets likely. Estimated completion: Oct. 31.
    • Canal Street project:
      • West Canal Street from Madison Street to September Street underway. Detour using Madison Street, West Columbus Street and September Street. 
      • Concrete and paving underway on East Canal Street from 2nd Street to Burr Oak Boulevard; roadway closed. Detour using Chestnut Street and Burr Oak Boulevard. Estimated completion: Oct. 31. 
    • Hocking Parkway on game days: Parkway will be closed to traffic between both ends of Loop Road 11 a.m.–6 p.m. during 2025 Hocking College home football games. Please avoid this area and use an alternative route on these dates.
      • Game day schedule, all Saturdays: Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 8.
  • Albany
    • West Clinton and Mill Street intersection: The village promotes caution at this intersection as it is now a three-way stop. 
    • Hebbardsville Road bridge: Athens County EMS announced Sept. 12 that unforeseen structural issues will cause a potential six-month closure of the bridge at Hebbardsville Road (CR 17A) at the Fisher Road intersection (CR 17). 

General

  • Local candidate night in Stewart: Hear from and meet with candidates for Federal Hocking Local School Board, Ames Township Trustee, Carthage Township Trustee, Rome Township Trustee and Coolville Mayor. Hosted by the League of Women Voters of Athens County. 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8. Federal Valley Resource Center, 8225 SR 329, Stewart. 
  • Albany new park ceremony: Celebrate the opening of Albany’s newest park at the name reveal and ribbon cutting. 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the corner of West and Center streets, Albany
  • Book donation drive-thru: Friends of the Athens County Public Libraries will hold its fall drive for used books to sell inside the library. 10 a.m.–noon Saturday, Oct. 11. Athens Public Library, 30 Home St., Athens
  • Smoke testing: The Village of Albany will conduct smoke tests to its sanitary sewer lines Saturday, Oct. 11. Learn more here
  • Guitar show: Southern Ohio Guitar Show will feature buy/sell/trade vendors from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12. $10/ticket, kids under 12 free. Vendor setup 7:30–10:30 a.m. Chillicothe High School, 425 Yoctangee Parkway, Chillicothe.
  • Anniversary park opening: All entrances are open at Athens Community Center as work on the 25th Anniversary Park begins. Grand opening to the public, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14. Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St., Athens.
  • Short-term rental taxes: Athens City Auditor Kathy Hecht would like to remind property owners of short-term rentals (less than 30 consecutive days per occupant) that the City of Athens assesses a Transient Guest Tax at a rate of 3%, due on a quarterly schedule. 
  • Seeking Chamber board members : The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking nominations for two new members to sit on the Board of Directors for a three-year term starting in 2026. Nominations due by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3.
