ATHENS, Ohio — The City of Athens is advising motorists and pedestrians to avoid areas impacted by flooding and standing water following heavy rainfall.
Please avoid the following areas:
- Richland Avenue — Flooding has been reported. Please steer clear of the area.
- East State Street between Stimson Avenue and May Avenue — Motorists should avoid this area due to flooding and standing water.
Water levels are beginning to recede in some locations; however, do not attempt to drive, walk, or bicycle through standing or moving water. Even after floodwaters begin to recede, roadways may remain hazardous.
Floodwater can be deeper and move faster than it appears. Standing water can also conceal damaged pavement, debris, open drains, downed electrical lines, or other hazards. Never drive around barricades or enter a roadway that has been closed due to flooding.
Motorists should use alternate routes, allow additional travel time, and use extra caution throughout the area. Please also give City crews and emergency personnel room to safely respond to flooded locations.
Turn around, don’t drown. Never attempt to cross a flooded roadway.
