ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — Consistent with historic norms, Athens County favored Democratic candidates for federal offices in the Nov. 5 general election – running contrary to the statewide vote for Bernie Moreno, Troy Balderson and Donald Trump.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for president, won a little over 54% of Athens County votes, compared to about 44% for Trump.
The Associated Press called Ohio’s race for Trump on Tuesday night. He won the state with 56% of the vote, according to unofficial results available from the Ohio Secretary of State as of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Incumbent U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown handily won Athens County, with 57% of votes cast. Statewide, however, he lost to challenger Bernie Moreno, flipping the seat for the Republican party.
As of 12:24 a.m., Moreno had obtained 50% of the popular vote while Brown obtained 46% of the popular vote, according to the Ohio Secretary of State.
County voters also went for Jerrad Christian, a U.S. Navy veteran with roots in Glouster, to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives. Overall, the 12th district returned incumbent Republican Troy Balderson to Washington.
The Associated Press called the race for Balderson with 68.6% of the vote going in his favor. District 12 has consistently voted Republican since it was first established in 2000, sending Patrick Tiberi to Washington until 2018 when Balderson took over the seat after Tiberi decided not to run for reelection.
