ATHENS, Ohio — The Athens County Fair, Aug. 7–15, marks its 171st year celebrating local agriculture and providing community entertainment with livestock showings, competitions, and food vendors.
General admission is $15 for each day, which includes all entertainment and rides. A season ticket for the entire week of the fair is $59, and a pass including membership to the Athens County Agricultural Society costs $64. The fair offers free admission for veterans on Saturday, Aug. 8, and seniors on Thursday, Aug. 13.
Senior Fair Board President Jeremy Carr told the Independent that organizers tried to balance old traditions and offerings in order to preserve a community tradition while attracting a new audience for this year’s fair.
He has served as president for three years, and been on the board for the last 12. He grew up attending the fair, but as time passed, he saw younger generations losing interest.
“When I’d come as a kid, it was big, and the last few years prior, the fair just started dwindling and dwindling away,” Carr said. “That’s when I stepped in as president to help try to revive it and bring it back.”
He said last year was a “huge success” for the board––the fair’s entertainment budget increased by almost $50,000, Carr said. The budget increase brought changes to the fair, including Diamond J Rodeo and Full Throttle Monster Trucks.
A large portion of the fair’s funds comes from renting parking space to Ohio University students, which has provided $200,000 so far. Carr said the board’s biggest goal is to break even during the week of the fair.
But he has goals beyond finances: He’s invested in the fair’s success because it means something to him personally. After attending the fair in childhood, he then brought his own children, throughout their lives, and now, gets to see his grandchild experience the fair.
“Hopefully this newer generation sees it the way I saw it when I was a kid,” he said.
Changes to the fair
Fair favorites return this year, including the popular school bus demolition derby introduced in 2024, and other events are being adapted for the 2026 season. This year, the board replaced Tough Track racing with Autocross, a more relaxed race format, to encourage participation.
Carr said demand for music has been high over the past few years, so he and the board invited The Creekers to play at 7 p.m. Aug. 10. The fair offers a pit pass this year that can be purchased on Monday, when the band performs.
The fair will also introduce a petting zoo this year, as well as donut and hot dog eating contests and a chainsaw carver.
“There’s just a lot of changes to make it different, so it’s not the same old fair,” Carr said.
