Tax levies on ballot in November election

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio — Athens County voters will decide numerous local issues in the Nov. 3 general election. Most are tax questions, including income tax proposals in Alexander Local Schools and Athens City Schools.

A complete list of questions and issues is available through the Athens County Board of Elections website. See exact ballot language here by selecting the appropriate district type. 

Athens County 

The county is asking voters to approve an additional tax levy for the Athens City-County Health Department. The 1-mill levy is estimated to generate more than $1.5 million per year over the next decade starting in 2027. 

Nelsonville 

The Mine Tavern, in the city’s second precinct, seeks approval to sell wine and liquor on Sundays. 

Albany

The village proposes an additional 3-mill tax levy for street maintenance over the next five years. The levy, assessed at $105 for every 100,000 of the Athens County auditor’s market value, is estimated to generate more than $63,000 annually. 

Amesville 

The village has two tax issues on the ballot. One is a renewal of a 2-mill tax levy for the police department for five years. The renewal is estimated to generate nearly $4,000 annually. The other is renewal of a separate 2-mill tax levy, also for five years, for current expenses. 

Buchtel

The village proposes an additional 5-mill tax levy for current expenses over the next five years. The levy is estimated to generate nearly $33,000 annually. 

Chauncey

The village is asking voters to renew a 5-mill tax levy for current expenses. The levy is estimated to generate more than $30,000 annually over five years. 

Jacksonville 

The village proposes renewing a 5-mill tax levy for fire protection, estimated to generate nearly $18,000 per year over five years. Jacksonville voters also will decide whether to renew a 5.3-mill tax levy for local expenses, generating nearly $19,000 annually over five years. 

Alexander Township (excluding Albany)

The township seeks renewal of its 1-mill tax levy for fire protection. The levy is expected to generate nearly $113,000 annually over five years, beginning in 2028. 

Ames Township (excluding Amesville)

The township has two issues before voters, both five-year renewals. One is a 1-mill tax levy for fire protection, estimated to generate $20,000 annually. The other is a 2-mill levy for road maintenance, expected to raise nearly $53,000 annually. 

Canaan Township (including City of Athens)

Voters will decide two issues, both renewals for five years starting in 2028. A 0.4-mill levy for fire protection is estimated to generate nearly $20,000 annually. A half-mill levy for cemetery maintenance is expected to generate more than $28,000 per year. 

Carthage Township

The township is asking voters to approve two additional tax levies for five years starting in 2028. One is a 3-mill levy for the construction and maintenance of area infrastructure, including roads and bridges. The levy is estimated to generate more than $121,000 annually. The other is a 0.6-mill levy for cemetery operations over five years, with estimated annual tax revenue of more than $24,000. 

Dover Township (excluding Chauncey)

The township proposes renewing a 2-mill tax levy for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges over five years, first due in 2028. The levy is estimated to generate more than $98,000 annually. 

Lee Township (excluding Albany) 

The township proposes renewing two half-mill levies to support firefighters, paramedics and their facilities. Combined, the levies are estimated to generate approximately $57,500 annually for five years, beginning in 2028. 

Lodi Township

The township seeks to renew a 1-mill tax levy for fire protection, estimated to generate more than $37,000 annually over the next five years. Big 33 Fuel & Convenience Store, a gas station and food vendor scheduled to open next summer at 12100 Pleasanton Road in Athens, also seeks voter approval to sell alcoholic beverages, including on Sundays.

Rome Township

The township proposes renewing a 5.5-mill tax levy to maintain roads and control dust. “dust control” over five years. The levy is estimated to generate more than $153,000 annually over five years beginning in 2028. 

Troy Township

The township has two issues on the ballot, both for five years. An additional 2-mill tax levy, excluding Coolville, for the street and bridge construction and maintenance is estimated at more than $110,000. Voters also will be asked whether to renew a 0.9-mill levy, including Coolville, for cemetery operations. That levy is estimated to generate more than $48,000 annually beginning in 2028. 

York Township (including Nelsonville and Buchtel)

The township proposes an additional 1-mill tax levy for cemetery operations over the next five years. The annual tax revenue is estimated at nearly $133,000.
