Empowering community engagement

A strong, vibrant community starts with you

Last week, we asked our community to help us reach 5,000 subscribers. As always, y’all knocked it out of the park. As I write this, we stand at 5,252 subscribers! Southeast Ohio has never let us down, and we love you for it.

Subscription to our newsletters is free, and we hope readers look forward to receiving The Indy, The Bulletin Board and The Scoop. Each of our newsletters is designed to bring you trustworthy, relevant information to keep you informed about what’s happening in Athens County.

Merely being informed isn’t what we’re aiming for, though. Our mission is to empower community engagement through accessible public service journalism. We want you to apply the information we present.

Yes, we want you to attend community events you see in The Bulletin Board or on the Community Calendar via Yodel. And of course, we absolutely want you to read the news we share in The Scoop and The Indy.

But true community engagement goes a step further. Join or volunteer for one of the 100+ organizations on the Athens County Community Calendar. Start a discussion with your neighbors, co-workers or friends about the issues you read about. Contact a public official to express your thoughts and concerns. Register and vote.

The power of community lies not in its leaders or institutions, but with its individual members. The strongest communities push forward from the grassroots, rather than being dragged along from the top. Athens County encompasses multiple communities defined by geography, beliefs, demographics. Those communities sometimes clash (we contain multitudes!), but our differences are what make this such a great place to live and work.

Athens County is never boring, if you know where to look.

Best of all, we come together to support things we care about, things that matter; the Independent is proof of that. Together, we are powerful … if we’re willing to act.
