
ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio –– Tuesday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, and the holiday will be acknowledged at events and gatherings throughout Athens County. See below for a list of where to celebrate those who have served in the military.
All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Meals and other benefits may require proof of service.

Sunday, Nov. 9
- 2 p.m.: Charles C. McCabe “Battle Hymn of the Republic” Historical Marker dedication. Union Army chaplain McCabe was born near the present site of Tupper Hall and popularized Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic” during the Civil War. Music provided by the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regimental Band. Ohio University’s Tupper Hall, 42 University Terrace, Athens.
Monday, Nov. 10
- 9:30 a.m.: Amesville Elementary Annual Veterans Day Celebration. Pupils and their families may honor a veteran deserving of recognition at the assembly. Register by filling out a form that went home with students. Amesville Elementary, SR 329, Amesville.
- 9 a.m.–5 p.m.: Notes of Respect to Veterans. Write a note to a veteran and receive a “cup of kindness” (coffee or hot chocolate). Vernon R. Alden Library, 30 Park Place, Athens.
- 9:15–10:45 a.m.: Veterans Day Assembly. Athens High School invites local veterans to enjoy donuts, coffee and refreshments with student council before an assembly featuring performances by the marching band and symphonic choir. RSVP. Athens High School, 1 High School Road, The Plains.
- 2–4 p.m.: 250th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. Includes a traditional sword cake-cutting ceremony. Snacks and drinks provided. John C. Calhoun Baker University Center, 1 Park Place, 3rd floor atrium, Athens.
- 6 p.m.: Veterans Day soup dinner and show. Federal Valley Resource Center, 8225 SR 329, Stewart.
Tuesday, Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day
- 10 a.m.–noon: Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony. Parade route: Morris Avenue, left onto East State Street, right onto Carpenter Street, and left onto Court Street. Ends on College Green, Athens. Ceremony begins at 11 a.m.
- 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.: Veterans Luncheon at the Lindley Inn, 9000 Hocking Hills Drive, The Plains.
- Noon: Southeast Ohio History Connection and Mount Zion Black Cultural Center present Clark Morgan as Milton Holland. 24 W. State St, Athens.

Thursday, Nov. 13
- 8 a.m.–5 p.m.: #STOP17 Veterans Suicide Awareness Campaign. Complete 17 reps of any type of exercise and receive a free “Bobcats Support Veterans” t-shirt. John C. Calhoun Baker University Center, 1 Park Place, 3rd floor atrium, Athens. Free and open to the public.

5–6 p.m.: Bridging the Gap: Academic History, Applied Practice, and Professional Military Education. Featuring Dr. Katrina Ponti of Cleveland State University.
